Yesterday in the ASG Skills Competition, Bruins Captain Zdeno Chara won the Hardest Shot competition.

And set the new record.

Phase II of the Cup Defense starts Tuesday PM when the Real Team (Daniel) Alfredsson face the True Team Chara!!! Ottawa comes to town closing out the month that featured 5 of the 7 Canadian Teams.

A Few Moments in Time to come, a dropping PUCK and the Best of the NHL this year in a usually Wickid Awesome Game! Hockey truly is unique having the Only Fun All-Star Game, fun for the Players & fun for the Fans. Prove me wrong if you can? ^_~

Sunday Sports-gasm! Redux
aka: Pats Another Bowl over Here, Man...

My old friend James would have called today the "Sunday Sports-Gasm".
Today I had a 12:30PM Capitals/Penguins NBC Game of the Week,
The 3PM Bruins/Flyers tilt and...
the 3PM Ravens/Patriots AFC Championship.
Followed by the NY Giants/SF 49ers NFC Champ which I'll read about in the morning.

If my life wasn't already dominated by the little screen seeing it's usually the new Doctor Who series on non-Sports days. I'm on Season Five, coming up to the 2-part season finale if you're feeling nosy.
I'd suggest watching this show but since you're cooler than me, chances are you already have but iDigress...

I just watched the Bruins grind out two games in a row.
Yesterday in the annual Saturday Matinee, an heart-wrenching loss to my hated rivals the NYC (Patoooie!) Rangers on Home Ice. Brad Marchand, just back from a 5-Game Suspension looked a few steps behind. And it might have cost us the game in a few places of space/time along the half-board in the 2nd or 3rrd period. I saw a few missteps but Marchy will get that back soon enough. We Win Some, We Lose Some.
It was just one of those losses, 2+ secs left in OT, killing a penalty and Bang...Game Over.
Ask Tony Soprano (shhhhh! I didn't say that!).

And this Afternoon, watching two thrilling games. Seeing the Flyers' Scott Hartnell score a natural hat-trick and seeing the Bruins Milan Lucic tally a "Gordie Howe Hat Trick".
The Bruins grind out a shootout victory from the 5-5 tie, 3 fights and a whole lot of action going on.

Two of the Best Games this Season. One a Loss...One a Win.
That's Just Hockey For Ya.
James used to be a big Flyers fan. I hope he still is. ;)

So Pass that Bowl over here, man...I mean Pats that Super Bowl!!!
Huzzah to the NE Patriots. a 5th Trip to the Super Bowl in 10 Years on Tom Brady Quarterbacking.
What drama, what a thrilling game. What a great Sunday Sports-gasm I'm having. Sorry...that only sounds a little TMI.
Thank you to the Patriots for shaking the NE Sports Area out of it's self-hating malaise and showed the way to the promised land, year after year, try after try. It trickled down to all three in the rest of the Big Four of my Beantowne Faire.
To the Krafts, to Bill Belichick, to Tom Brady and all the Patriots from the Cheerleaders to the tired souls marching their asses up to the open skyscraper of the 300 Section of Gillette...

Because all we're concentrated on is winning one more game and our next opponent...

the next DC Comics Logo. The Maker's Mark.

The Brand.

MARVEL has it's name, literally. It's been stylized many times for many ages of magazine.

Yet DC has been tinkering around now going on Twice in a Decade.

The History of the DC Comics Logo ending with the "Bullet" introduced in 1977 and the "Spin" introduced in 2004/5.
Coming this March 2012 for our Superman & Batman Funnybooks & Graphic Novels...

These are the prototype looks, property-specific.

Yet these more boring multi-colored variables await as well...

Design Wise...

Pretty Keen. Tight. Its use of space has brevity. Concise.

The Whole "Peel Back the Surface" Motif.

Totally Works.
A few words by a Professional Designer on the change as well. Cool stuff. I like how he mentions how the logo loses its star/s...
"Although from beginning to end the logo is markedly different, you can see a continuity from step to step. If DC Comics/Entertainment wanted to change the conversation with their new branding, they are certainly doing that, but we’ll have to wait and see whether it is for the better or worse. Gone are the campy swirl and star elements. Also gone, though, is the dynamism and playfulness. What is left is an almost uptight corporate symbol that, without the title underneath, is unclear as to what it represents."

I really hope DC keeps the property-specific ones. They're pretty inventive and celebrate the properties they represent. DC shifted its Corporate HQ from NYC to Los Angeles last year, growing from "Comic" to "Entertainment".

The Bullet Logo is perhaps my favorite. I'm gonna need a tee-shirt for that one.

All-Star Captains Pick Teams Again!
aka: But Would They Go Down With the Sinking Ship?

Just a quick PUCK in the Early AM before I head off to the Stress & Genius Factory yet know that the NHL All-Star Game, Sunday, January 29th in the Capital of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario.
As last year, the Teams will be Selected in a more fun manner, having the Two Team Captains pick their teams from the overall roster. In the past, the traditional East/West split was the norm, with the Occasional "North America Vs. the World" or the "NHL versus the Soviet Union".
The Team Captains? The Host City gets one with the Ottawa Senators cap'n Daniel Alfredsson honoring his Home Team, wearing white.
The Other Side? The Stanley Cup Champion Captain Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara, sporting the Dark Colours.
Will the other two Bruins All-Stars, Tim Thomas & Tyler Seguin be on the same team???
Who knows! It's the Captain's Alternating Picks!
Nonetheless, All-Star Games in the NHL embrace what the other Big Four don't really have.
Fun. Fun Fun Fun.
The NFL Pro Bowl? Yawn...
The MLB All-Star Game which decides Home Field Advantage for the winning league? That notion should be Unconstitutional along with Astroturf, the Designated Hitter, SOPA, PIPA and the NDAA but iDigress...
The NBA ASG? Who cares? I think the players don't even care about that one...
But the NHL? This ASG is a real treat for real fans.

Big Week for the Beantown Bees. As always, I'm entertained and always something to talk about with the Black & Gold.

But what do you think OCHO about a Captain who Abandoned the ship such as Francisco Schettino, the Italian Cruise Boat Cap'n? I'm firmly against the Death Penalty but sheeeesh...this guy should walk the Plank.
On the Death Penalty, I'm pretty much at this point 99% against...the 1% would be for Pfc. Bradley Manning who leaked national information to WikiLeaks. I mean under Civilian Law I'm sure I'd find Life in Prison to be acceptable but for Military Law? I'm thinking this guy deserves a Firing Squad.
What does this have to do with Hockey? I dunno...just riffing on a Captain abandoning his ship & its consequences.

During the semester break at the Stress & Genius Factory the primary radio station changes for One Blissful Month. The dial is turned to the Classic Rock Station this January.

And the other day my ear caught a hook over the usual cacophony of the the commercial kitchen; hood vents, other people, running ovens...

Then a radio smuggled somewhere in all that White Noise...and not too loud as to upset the customers but iDigress...

A Hook. A Hook is a Riff. A Riff is a Lick. A Lick is a...well.

A Hook is an element to a song that gives it memorability.

Of all things I understand I've never heard this familiar song before.

And I Exclaim.

Last night I had to buy it from the iTunes Store.

Tattoo by Van Halen, from the forthcoming February 2012 "A Different Kind of Truth", starring David Lee Roth on Lead Vocals.

In my final analysis of this I firmly believe Diamond Dave to be ripping off Lady GaGa in a slight way that cannot be proven, only thought about...in the craftiness of the Hook mind you.

Tattoo is not a great song. Not a good song. It's pretty standard fare.

Yet its hook, its choral hook had me singing it for days afterward, as when I was exposed to Gaga.

A Meme in a Pop Single. It's called Hook. And it gets in you.

Tattoo, Tattoo...I was singing it for days, just frothing off of my subconscious unto my lips.

In Other Auditory Aims...

I finished the Trifecta with my negotiation audiobooks.

I started with Getting to Yes by Fisher, Ury, et al.

Then Followed up with Difficult Conversations: What Matters Most by Stone, Heen, et al.

now I finish the group series with

"Getting Past No"

It's sound tactics for dealing with unreasonable people.

I work with & for demanding people. I can't ruin my earning potential with my temperament, therefore this individual needs some better tactics for dealing with Life's Stresses Head On & Positively.

I'm tightly wound...it's part of me. I stress at work. Shit, sometime I fall into "panic" and it ain't fun.

Nonetheless along with the Spirituality I embrace, I also love things such as Dispute Resolution. It's a fascinating subject completely compatible with my Spirituality. They often tell the same message two different ways, it's amazing.

This audiobook does build on themes established in "Getting To Yes" so know it's best read as part of a building series. Oddly enough the central theme of Getting Past No seems to be Detachment, something advised in the Bhagavad Gita but iDigress...

So far so good yet production-wise, musical cues are distracting and also cements the reader in 1991 when these values are a lot more universal than then. A little "old", "dated" yet still of great value.

The Comics Gnome POOTS...Worlds of WHOA!

As Bill said to Ted, "Strange Things are Afoot at the Circle K, my friend".

As sporadically reported here on OCHO, one of my favorite living Sci-Fi writers is wrapping up his six-year run on BATMAN.

And he's getting to finish the story he intended to tell.

BATMAN, INCORPORATED #1, written by Grant Morrison & art by the wonderfully talented Chris Burnham. Coming in Spring 2012 in the DCnU "Second Wave"

The story I gleaned has since panned out.

A One-Shot to close the book on Volume One.

Then...

a Season Two of BATMAN, INC. This time set in the DCnU.

What does that mean? Nothing too much really, Batman is just a little younger and got a different suit. Robin is still Damien Wayne, his test tube son, child of Talia, underworld crime goddess.

12 issues to finish one Bat-Sized Story, 7 Years in the Making by the time this is done.

Grant Promised Tears. Tears Upon Tears, I think I'm paraphrasing.

I keep promising myself I wasn't about to fall for this New 52 Hooey with the DC Comics.

Nonetheless, in the six cancellations I heard about none were the three titles I'm currently enjoying:
ACTION COMICS by Grant Morrison, et al.

BATWOMAN by J.H. Williams III, et al. and...

RED HOOD & THE OUTLAWS by Lobdell & Rouqefort.

We're gonna have to add on perhaps three new titles.

BATMAN, INC.

EARTH-2, an alternate universe world featuring the JSA and...

WORLDS' FINEST, the team up magazine of the HUNTRESS and POWER GIRL who are stranded on this New 52 Earth; their home of origin, Earth-2! The Huntress goes back to what's always works best, being the daughter of Batman & Catwoman, although a Parallel Earth.

I love Multiverse tales. When I was a kid one of my favorite monthlies was...

INFINITY, INC. The Earth-Two legacy team of young heroes inspired by their parents & mentors.

There's more out there than theses retreads yet I'm compelled! I'm interested.

I was in for BATMAN, INC but EARTH-2 and a spinoff? Count me in.

What Am I Doing Here?

Simple: One Spiritual Comics Geek with a Message and Many Multi-Coloured Tee-Shirts with bandanas!

The Emotional Spectrum is a great fictional device that in my opinion really nails the whole "Comics As Metaphor in Life" Idea. It's from the Green Lantern series of the DC Comics; it relies on a fetish & some raw emotions...the rest is a Light Show to entertain the masses.

Take simple light. Photons!
They keep you warm, they light the way and we're pretty much made of them on some level.

Now imagine...you have a problem, we can solve this problem by Shining Light on It.

If we follow the Emotional Spectrum as metaphor, the Colour of the Light we shine on a situation defines the results or solutions. The filter for that light tends to illuminate certain consistent outcomes

Say if I shine Red Light for Rage on a problem, my solutions tend to be set of predictable patterns such as SMASH!, pout, cry, bleed, humiliate, SLAM! or lash out.

If I shine Orange Light for Greed, outcomes usually involve hurt feelings, isolation due to hurting feelings and using bad means for selfish ends. Sure you'll get your way...yet in the Orange Light, many things you should not pick up look very attractive & come at high stakes.

If I shine Yellow Light for Fear, predictable outcome patterns usually involve Hiding Truth, cowardice, shrinking from duty, and allowing circumstances to control me & not the other way around.

If I use Green for Willpower, I can pretty much be strong, solve problems and do anything with enough willpower & focus. Green exists at the Center of the Spectrum and is perhaps the Best Light to Shine on Anything being intrinsically balanced.

If I use Blue for Hope, then my possibilities include sharing hope, peaceful resolution and foundation building...a sense of "what's next?"

And for me and Doctor Hooey what we feel is probably the best light to shine on any experience is...

Indigo for Compassion. When we shine Indigo, we can help others, foster respect, build bridges by relating yet getting things done by Simply Doing. Compassion demands Empathy Without the Weakness of Pity...it is replaced by a Shepard's mentality of corralling, leading and also disciplining.

Ladies & Gentlemen, may I introduce you to the real & legendary "Sully", my Grandfather's Shillelagh.

Every Indigo Lantern has one.
There is also Violet for Love in the mythos the Emotional Spectrum originated; only Gals are Star Sapphires so I got the Tee-Shirt, plastic swag ring & purple bandana and I mailed them off to Deedee sometime last year. Yet when we shine Violet on a problem, we get outcomes like hugs & kisses to make things all better.

I fondly refer to these sometimes as my Saturday AM Cartoon watching clothes.
I also like wearing the Lantern tee & Bandana around this latest crop of friends' infants because the wee ones love looking at vibrant primary colors and the smiling, blinking goof wearing them.

Thanks for letting me flex my Geek with a little help from a friend, my iPod Touch, an amazing gadget.

Quite truly a browser-in-your-pocket. Netflix Streaming is the balls. Email, Safari are nice. GuitarTookit is quite possibly the keenest blade in this Swiss Army Knife yet I love having a simple camera.

I've yearned for a Digital Camera for years yet didn't bite and pick one up. I've bought 2 digital cameras as presents for loved ones over the past few years but failed to get one for myself.

As your iPads, iPhones or comparable feltercarb, with the iPod Touch a photo is an email away from sharing with the world and I'm probably wasting a step by emailing & saving it manually (nah...I feel an editorial pause if necessary but iDigress...)

Oh....one for the Shizzengiggles...

on Meditation some more...(aka: recent things)

I was trying to explain it to Peter...badly. So I'm letting that conversation which inspired this poot serve as a mere draft.

It was a conclusion I came to during meditation.

My mind is a really, ridiculously loud place.

The hardest thing during meditation is to Quiet the Mind.

And to quiet my mind seems like the Hardest Thing to do in this World.

With anyone quieting the mind is a very hard thing to do. It's basically a challenge crossing the threshold for anyone entering that particular door. This realization isn't new at all...Arjuna even says to Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita 6:33, 34, "For the mind is restless, turbulent, obstinate and very strong, O Kṛṣṇa, and to subdue it, I think, is more difficult than controlling the wind."

So saying something like that about "feeling crazy" is Completely Normal.

It's as if my Mind will not shut up.

When it comes to meditation we have to find an acceptable level of Multiple Personality Disorder.

I'm being very serious here.

Right Now: all of us, at all times are the aggregate of Mind, Body and Spirit.

So I want you to dig this: Spirit & Body aren't the Problem here.

When I sit down to my 30-minute morning meditation to start my day, I get ready. I light a candle. I sit upright and I close my eyes. And try to find the Center, the Gap In-Between Thoughts. The space where I can sit and watch the world go by, undistracted.

Yet it's hard to get there at first.

And even harder sometimes since I haven't been in constant practice.

So I come to my Multiple Personalities for 30 Minutes.

I have a Spirit which has called the Time Out and would like to Sync with the Great iTunes Above.

I have a Body which thankfully is very receptive to my wishes although it gets cranky here & there. It's much better than we began this voyage close to two years ago, when I'd always fall asleep during meditations. I no longer nod off during meditation. Sure the Body wants to crack its back, slouch, crack a knuckle, roll the wrists, sigh, gets tingly if left too long in one place. It wants to move around. It wants break'est. Another cup of coffee. Yet the Body really hangs in there and accepts the situation with the Spirit and just sits there for 30 minutes...

Then I have a Mind. Which flashes in a constant torrent of This and That! And over here! and Over there! and look at shiny! and remember when! and remember If!

My gurus suggest a mantra or passage to basically "cockblock" the mind from getting its way.

And the mantra works for a few minutes...then a thought creeps in and all of a sudden its back to the Grand Mental Cinema again.

It's a lot like shampoo. Rinse, Wash, Repeat.

It's a constant back and forth for 30 minutes.

It's gotten to the point I can feel my Spirit, my Atman just say to my Body, "thank you for co-operating...I'll get you beer tonight and some of that IntrePoop you like". No actually it never says it like that but that's the gist. Spirit really digs that body is into this 30 minutes of Cruise Control.

And Mind keeps going on and on and on and on like a hyper-active child!

I hear my Spirit saying things to my Mind like, "are you done yet?...I guess not". The Spirit, like a parent smiles with infinite patience for their child.

At the end of the month Ottawa comes to town making 5 of the 7 Canadian Teams to come through Beantown Faire. Edmonton came through the Gahhden earlier this season. And Toronto we'll see a few more times being division rivals.
Yet Calgary Flames last night (9-0 Bruins win), Saturday Afternoon matinee in a Stanley Cup Finals Rematch versus the Vancouver Canucks.
The Winnipeg Jets earn their wings & frequent flyer miles by inhabiting the Southeast Division, Atlanta's old stomping grounds, coming to town Tuesday and Thursday Les Habitants de Montreal.

It's as if the Great White North is on its 2012 Winter Tour. Which is great because I'm not going to Canada this year so they can come here all they want.
And bring Canadian Gals!
37 Games in the Season and the Bruins are the team to beat. Averaging 3.65 Goals Per Game. Letting up 1.85 Goals Per Game, leading the League in both categories. The only team letting up less than 2 goals per game on average. Only the NYC (patooie) Rangers have one point over the B's in the East and in the League. Vancouver is the best in the West, tied with the Bruins with 53 points.

No Sophomore Slump for Tyler Seguin. The Second-Year Center benched in a so-called controversy has only missed that one game for missing an AM meeting, 36 games played, 16 goals, 20 assists for 36 points. Mouthbreathers...that is One Point Per Game. And in Hockey-ese that translating into AWESOME! He's a big part of the the future but as I'm fond of noticing...the Future Is Now!

This Year's Bruins got it all. 2 great goalies. Defense deeper than an Olympic Diving Pool. Offense in where everyone pitches in & never gives up. It's a Hockey Nut's Dream Come True.
To the fans of sub-par teams, Carolina, Anaheim, NYI, & Columbus in the Other End of the Success Spectrum, we lived up & down for decades in Boston. But to Raleigh and Orange Co...don't give up! You've had the Cup before so know it really does go around. There has to be Last Place in any standing, I know having a team you love not play great really takes the shine off the whole experience.

1. This Shandor has nothing to do with us. If you'll remember I hastily changed our Blog's URL from this to our current URL. I added the word "the" in front of Channel OCHO. Why? This was back in 2003 and a gal I was dating was reading OCHO without me knowing, caused some personal drama based upon a post therefore I changed the URL as a knee-jerk reaction. America's Test Kitchen on PBS.
This has to go down as one of the Best Shows Ever. It's Complete and is 30 Minutes of Great Technique & Problem Solving.
Past favorites of mine are the Blueberry Muffins and the Perfect Thanksgiving Turkey & Stuffing episodes.

What are We Doing Here: Along with the the usual denizens of this Blog, I usually post away on such subjects as music, spirituality, cooking, comicbooks, getting over Star Wars, Hockey in particular from the Boston-centric POV, occasional scuba diving and anything else deemed "cool". I also sometimes have atrocious spelling or the such. I'm always weeding simple errors out of my posts...I was never meant to be an Editor.
When Did This Start: in late 2002, this became the Virtual Coffeetable for me and my friends. Over the years, not only did it keep my disparate friends & I "together", we've honed it into our own coffeetable magazine, chock full of the new cool things that we've always shared with the others. Life, geography, kids and everything in-between Nothing & Everything.
For Gawd's Sakes...Why??? Because Blogging is Fun! It's one part challenge, creating readable copy week after week and another part some weird diary because you have to dig deep & get personal in order to make readable copy week after week. New Year's Edition

I've been giving it much thought and I have to say the best new release of 2011 for me is:

PJ Harvey, Let England Shake

This album remains on the nano after almost 8 months.

Mostly All Other 2011 new titles came & went.
Some singles remain from these 2011 releases although PJ Harvey's February 2011 release is one of three music albums to remain in total on a 16GB iPod nano.
"Let England Shake" grew on me over time and impresses on every listen.

At first I though it girlish, playful noises. Oddly jingoistic being pro-English yet a bit of "what have we come to as Britons" melancholy mixed in to boot. All songs are little stories...
Sometimes disjointed yet what eventually shined through after a few listenings was a tightly and slickly produced great rock 'n' roll album, an artifact whose production will get fewer & fewer as the years charge along, Time being the Juggernaut it is.

As an album, as a progression of rock sounds & songs. Evocative & respectful of its source. Overly British nonetheless that is British Rock for you. Sad stories told in sonic Black & White shades. The history of being poor. Or of countless turf wars from knights of yore to football hoodlums. It's of the same Cosmic Fabric that when cut fit the Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks and the Clash just for starters.

"On Battleship Hill" is my favorite in a collection of good rock songs.

"Cruel nature has won again..."
Why is it the Brits who get Rock Right more oft than naught?

Coming in at a close second are the pair of SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD motion picture soundtracks, originally released in late 2010 and I caught up to the movie in mid 2011 so nyah! Both kept in their entirety an a great addition to the Shuffle.

Honorable Mention goes to Keith Richards' *LIFE* and Deepak Chopra's "The Soul of Leadership" for my fave audiobook of the year, all paid for from the iTunes Store. Audible Audiobook accounts are cool too so sez Doctor Hooey but iDigress...

Also my sung-in-Sanskrit Bhagavad Gita which I purchased this year, I think was a nice pick-up.

I didn't go "ga-ga" for new music in 2011, I guess. Here's for 2012 to have more music and if you think I missed a few, please share your thoughts!

Yee haw! To-Nite! Dallas ends the month & the year as the Bruins go to the Lone Star State to shoot Stars.
A 7-game win streak. 9-2 so far this final month of 2011, the Year of the Bear.
In 2011 the Gallery Gawds have witnessed some of the best Bruins Hockey ever recorded or cared over.
So to all reading this Have a Happy & Safe New Year's Eve. Full of friends, family, fireworks, staying up late, asti spumanti, Chinese Take-Out...and someone to kiss at Midnight.
Huzzah!! Happy New Year from and to Channel OCHO!

It's New Year's Eve.
I'm staying in.
As I'm oft to do.
I'd rather watch the Bruins at 8PM and maybe...just maybe stay tuned to see if the Times Square ball drops on Ryan Seacrest's head finally.

This is it. Finally. The Grant Morrison Years come full circle with LEVIATHAN STRIKES!

Under the BATMAN INCORPORATED banner as well.

If you've been clued into the recent goings-on at the DC Magazine Company we'll know that all titles got a New #1, set in an Enhanced Continuity post-Flashpoint event but iDigress...

Some good titles got caught in the Undertow such as XOMBI,
Some stood out and rode the wave ashore like BATWOMAN...

Then this nugget gets pooted. This is the promised missing piece to the puzzle.

Where this One-Shot fits in the continuity is unclear and I do not care.

Where it fits in the Grant Morrison Years writing BATMAN is squarely at The End.
Diametrically Opposed to The Beginning...
BATMAN #655, published late July 2006. Five Years of Loose Ends.

Closure to one of my favorite stories of the last DC Era.

BATMAN INC. ended abruptly mid-story and had no new #1 in the DCnU.

Dick Grayson went from being Gotham's Dark Knight, back to being NIGHTWING with his own #1 which I didn't buy. Eddy Barrows is on pencils too so I'm probably missing wickid good art.

The Returned Bruce Wayne took his son Damian Wayne as his Robin and the Comics Gnome didn't poot the DCnU BATMAN AND ROBIN by Tomasi & Gleason.

So when it was said & done post-FLASHPOINT, the BATMAN INC. idea was mostly shelved.

Nonetheless, Africa got to keep their Batman from the BATMAN INC days, BATWING.

To me, BATMAN INC. was an audacious idea. Tell the World that Bruce Wayne is Batman's financier...and ALWAYS HAD BEEN!
Better than out himself as the Batman, Bruce Wayne makes the Bat a Brand!

It was real fun but it's done.

Touched by an Angel Edition.

OK. Not really an Angel. Sometimes he's a sheer demon.

But I was deeply touched by a dog recently.

Sometimes a dog jumps in your lap and nails the wedding tackle so hard you walk funny for minutes.

Touched. ;)

But really.

This is Benny. Benito Juarez. One Damn Good Dog. And he was Rescued.

Benny is a mutt. A mix of what we think is rat terrier and maybe a little Chihuahua.

And he happens to be one of the best dogs I've ever helped care for.

Someone Abandoned this Noodle of Love. I don't get it. Well someone must have had their reasons I guess.

It makes me think of my old cat, Millie. I abandoned him! I did. Therefore I cannot be judgmental about whomever abandoned Benny in South Texas.

My cat...I couldn't take him with me where I was going after a nasty split & I needed a new address and she agreed to take him. That's it. And that was all I heard of the pet. Incidentally my asthma attacks and their Emergency Room trips ceased! I still feel bad after all this time. The cat would probably be near the end of his natural life about now if he lived long enough...and I think stupid silly things like "does he remember me?"...did he die with dignity & love? Did I let him down even though he was the Key to my Asthma? I have to trust that what I did was best I guess.

From Another Time Long Long Ago...

Benny & I would walk. And I'd listen to my iPod. I "read" most of Keith Richards' "Life" via audiobook. I'd sing to the poor pooch too...and the Graveyard. I'd sing to the Dead...I think I'm a big hit with the Dead thinking who takes time to sing to them? The Dog & I took great walks around Malden's Fellsmere Pond, where nature converges...water, fish, ducks, geese, grass, trees, fountains...it's a nice slice of Urban Planning.

And it's all over. No more dog walking with Benny.

I feel blessed having Just One More Minute with him. I met Deedee & her Mum for coffee before they took off in their minivan, fully loaded with Deedee's possessions bound for the Lone Star State.

Benny jumped out of the car and I let him lick my face one last time.

Like the end of some 1940s movie.

I do hope to see Benny again.

But I'll always feel a little bad about Millie. Asthma-less and all. That's a tough one. Benny was rescued. And so was Millie in a way.

I guess we who roll the dice with our pets by committing them to Rescue need to have faith that it'll work out.

So to the people whose circumstances demanded leaving Benny behind I hope you can feel good that he's probably one of the best loved dogs in the Multiverse.

You can quote me on that one.

In Addition, turning the existing Playoff Structure intosome Abstract Tessaract, an Idea I can only Hope to Visualize without directexperience.

With the Atlanta Thrashers moving to Winnipeg, having thoseJets in the Southeast Division makes need for having them play their naturalneighbors and soon-to-be rivals.

It would be much like the Old Style Hockey I grew up with inthe 70s & 80s with the Campbell & Prince of Wales Conferences having asimilar inner 4 Division Split of the Adams, Patrick, Norris & SmytheDivisions.

Currently, the League has 2 Conferences with 3 Division perside, 6 total with 5 teams each.

All these numbers give me headaches…

It would be nice if the NHL, an organization that loves it’sClassic Connections would adopt an Historically Laden Names to the Conferencesas Before...

Stuffed mushrooms I'm simply making a sausage stuffing with Sweet Eye-talian and Jimmy Dean Sage, mixed with domestic powdered parm and fresh parsley, fresh cracked coarse black pepper.
The Pigs in a Blanket is a remarkable simple thing to execute for guests. I take Pillsbury Crescent rolls and use it like puff pastry or pate-a-chou, wrap a sausage and bake it until it's done. Slice on a bias & serve with an array of mustards.
Finger foods for first!

So far so good. Three issues in and it could always go south but I'd guess I'd know since I'd be buying it. ^_~

This one has the Best Last Page. Our Rawk Trio of Misfits end up on an astral journey but the fee is their Most Cherished Memory! They'll get them back...if they get back! Muhahahaha! And we of course get a peek at all three memories of these three titanic thrillseekers.

Why they do what they do is beyond me and beyond themselves for all I know but they're caught up in This Superhero World and So Am I...

Another Trip Around The Sun…

It’s funny but this phrase came up yesterday twice.

And it elated me.

It was my Birthday.

Therefore making it my Equinox.

Another Trip Around the Sun.

Said to me over the course of the evening buy two differentfriends. Either I’ve never heardthis one or haven’t in a long time. Nonetheless, hearing it elated myself to no end.

Hearing it again made it synchronous.

Looking at the bar’s teevee on the way out of dinner, Bruins3, Isles 0. 2^nd Period made me smile. It’s my birthday dinner. Deedee’s on her way out of town and we hadn’t been back tothe Border Cafe since she got landed earlier this year.

I will miss the dog. This could be a Country Song. A real country song like you hear at the Border Café! Yee haw. ;P

Good time. LoneStar Beer though, no Margarita. I’d brunched at Noon with friends old & new for a few wethours over great bloody marys* but iDigress…

*(@magounssaloon for the Bloody Sunday, the Mary served withJamesons instead of Vodka, delicious!)

Low-Key Birthday is my Speed. I informed Doctor Hooey of guaranteed attendance of mySurprise Wake & Funeral following my Next Surprise Birthday Party. I had a full day of friends andfood. And made a little time tonap in between company & the deluge of phonecalls. It was a very nice birthday.

And it all was wrapped with a 6-0 Bruins victory on LongIsland.

Dig This: I almost thought about going to last night’s roadgame in New York. James &Laura live there and they’re always inviting me down.

There was ONLY one thing holding me back this time…

I was fighting a chest cold. Ever since the cold snap a fewweeks back, I’ve been “brewin’” up a cloudy storm in my lungs. I suffered a Petit Mal asthma attackduring work two weeks ago. Yeahand I’ve been healthy enough without an inhaler with I didn’t have an inhalerwhen I needed it the most. So…

My Next Big Idea is a Belt Buckle with a holder for thePuffer with the words: “Asthma Sucks!” The stooped things always discharge in your pocket & collect pocketlint. Think about that one! Getting a mouthful of pocket link.

Then last week I lose my voice.

I blame the radiators we turned on and their collection of Year-Long Dust Bunnies, one of my many archenemies.

This week was taxing yet ended on its feet. That's how we judge the winner of a Hockey Fight, for Pete's Sake if you were ever wonder "How Does One Win A Hockey Fight?"

Be the One Standing.

The Comics Gnome POOTS...a New & Strange Talent!

The Strange Talent of Luther Strode #2 (of 6)

This is perhaps the most fun I've had in a long time with being completely Grossed-Out.

And I mean that. I don't even want to read it on the bus anymore...

I gotta keep it in its little brown bag until I get home.

It's cartoony yet graphic as all hell showing new ways a body can be dismembered by unarmed hands of strength!

Geeky little Luther Strode sends away for the Hercules Method from the back of a funnybook.

The Result is Strange as Luther gains the bodily strength but he seems to be coming across the whole "power & responsibility" posit that Spider-Man coined.

And of course any good story got its depth and badguy so this will be on the top of the stack in its next 4 releases.

Good Stuff. a reason to go to the FunnyBook Bodega.

From the creative team of Vertigo's "100 Bullets".

There's not much to say beyond it was only $1. One Dollar.

And the rest of it I hope is as awesome as the first issue.

Sets the stage in a Near-Future with a genetically modified almost-human tailored for the rigors of space flight/life. His name is Orson. Anyone with a pedigree in SciFi gets this reference.

We open with in a flashback to what could be a failed Mars Mission then orson awaking once again from this recurring nightmare & memory...to a two-page Splash Page of what looks like looking north up Tremont Street, Boston, MA USA but flooded, yet still inhabited with bridges, walkways and gondolas. Nonetheless, post-cataclysm. The City is not mentioned by name in Issue #1 although the image was very familiar to this reader.

Looking forward to the next 8 issues.

BATWOMAN #3

both really great titles. A good Stack this week.

For a month now, I’ve been using both iPods in my dailylife they are kind of like the fictional Giant Robot squadron of my favoriteanime, fighting the forces of ennui & quiet moments with my personalbackdrop. Now Featuring Email,Amateur Photography and YouTube!

Not to mention Infinity Blade but I just did.

I’m also using the iPod Touch to watch GUNDAM 00 duringlunch breaks & at home before bed. I can tune into Netflix whenever I want as well.

S’Funny thing is, I got No Music On It. Sure I can dial up Pandora or RadioParadise when I got an open wireless. But No Music. That'll come later...

So I rely on the orange iPod nano for that!

All service-long at work, and after Black Friday comes time for the Holiday Music.

Peter, OCHO's very own Doctor Hooey gave me this "fresh off the Apple Tree in China & Cupertino" iPod Touch loaded with his very own "Sully's Gonna Dig These Apps". The Good Doctor saved about 2GB Free for music if I so liked to sych..

or any video purchase/rental from the iTunes Store as well.

Also he's been meaning me to watch TeeVee's LOST and I kept Absolute Spoiler-Free so I can enjoy & anticipate a show suggested by one of my best friends. And he's got it on iTunes. For when I don't have a Wireless Signal.

It's my first flirtation with the fingerful fretboard of the iTouch/iPhone interface.

What a neat device.

On top of it all, I got a 3^rd gadget of futurefeltercarb floating in my front pocket.

My QWERTY SmartPhone is refer to as “CrackBerry Crunch!”

In other news, what have I bought from the iTunes Storerecently. Since I’m not synchingthe iPod Touch to my iTunes for a while, I got no new Apps to extol.

Just the same old, same old foolishness with a flashdrivewith a click wheel for music only.

I picked up for $10.

The Bhagavad Gita sung by Meena Mahadeva. It’s really basic nonetheless all inSanskrit and earnest. I listen toit at night while I sleep, sure that my Heart hears this as I dream.

I'm such as geek! I listen to the chapter as I read it in English on the bus in the morning, I use the Sanskrit Big Idea Words as anchors to keep in pace with the singing.

And from an NPR Weekend magazine show, 2 singles from Tony Bennett's last release of standards

This kind of music is fated to be muzak for the Hipster Brunch Bistros although I picked up two singles that "made the grade" and were featured in the NPR interview about the album.

The Lady is a Tramp with Lady Gaga and

Body & Soul with Amy Winehouse.

First the Gaga, who I love but avoided the sophomore slump of "Born This Way". The exposure to the singles from Born This Way leaves me unimpressed so I'll say this one track with the great Tony Bennett is better than her last over-produced, over-thought & over-wrought opus.

I should listen to the whole album but if I hear the title track or Edge of Glory again, I'm libel to implode into a Quantum Singularity.

The Winehouse track...Bennett got wistful & sad. He felt that Winehouse "had the gift". That he was waiting for a singer like her since the advent of the rock band in the early 60s when it became about the Band and not the Singer in Pop Music.

So until I'll make the jump to Lightspeed, 4G & Infinity with the iPhone in a year or two, I'll be a man of Two iPods. And a frakkin' phone.

I really need that Futility Belt now...

The Fall Foliage season is leaving, all pun intended.

All on the ground are the multitude of yellow & brown leaves. Lots of trees are now bare as well. I've always marveled at seeing the bird's nests in the bare branches, once concealed by leafs in the seasons preceding the Autumnal Equinox.

My favorites though are the Oranges & Reds of the fall leaves in the sunlight.

I gawk & rubber neck at nature and now I can share this.

I hope you like them.

Rattling Your Sabres!

aka: Four-In-A-Row is More Like It

Ahhh…it’s November. My favorite month. As theView from this Birdhouse observes, autumn is at its peak & foliage isnature’s tribute to the sun’s rainbow but iDigress…

This crisp, clean, cool air in hooded sweatshirts will bereplaced by driving snow with wet, ugly weather shortly. Icy sidewalks are my nemesis now, nolonger cats. S’funny how God keepsgiving us our rivals & enemies.

Speaking of Rivals, Northeast Division rivals the BuffaloSabres are in town tonight. I lovethe Sabres. From their classicuniforms to Mike Foligno’s salad bowl helmet to Clink Malarchuk, Dale Hawerchuk& Dave Andreychuk all on the team at the same time, leading the NHL inChuks in the early 90’s. CraigRamsey, Grant Fuhr, Pierre Turgeon, Alexander Mogilny, Pat LaFontaine, BradMay, Dominik Hasek; the Dramatis Personae watching the Bruins faceoff againsttough Sabres night after night, year after year. Lindy Ruff’s been their coach for 14 Seasons (2 divisionchampionships, 1 Presidents Cup & 1 Stanley Cup Finals appearance &missed the playoffs only 3 times in Ruff’s tenure).

Buffalo is one hockey hotbed. Their natural rivals are about 2 hours away over the LakeOntario, the Toronto Maple Leafs, nonetheless I grew up watching lots and lotsof the Blue & Yellow of Sabres growing up Adams Division then NortheastDivision combatants. The initialWinter Classic of the 2007-08 season owns the attendance record at 71,217filling football’s Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Buffalo’s been a part of my hockey diet for a while whetherit be Buffalo Wings with Meathead before the game at Hooters* or any giventelevised tilt versus the Buffalo Sabres. Wah wah wah…

(*Hooters no longer exists at its North Station locationtherefore Meathead & I are unable to perform one of our favorite pre-gamerituals anymore, titties & beer of course…it was its own space/time whenbeer & hockey reigned supreme. Huzzah!)

Can the Bruins make it five in a row tonight? I’m sure gonna find out. The toughest part is waiting for Marioto call back. I don’t want to ruina good night’s game with an afternoon of beer & pooping out too early. I’m trying to get him out of the house,put on a Bruins shirt and at least go try to talk to some chicks at a bar overthe game tonight. I mean whynot!

It is something we’ve never done! Maybe I should put out a Craigslist Ad, two awesome handsomecharming single men looking for two awesome single ladies to watch game with atawesome bar tonight. Sheeesh…That’s something I do not think Mario would go for.

I’ll Tweet that instead and see if we generate anyinterest. ;P

It’s time to go and Carpe Diem before the PUCK dropstonight.

I hadda go back. I bought more.

I ended up watching this movie again waiting for & eating my Sammich Delivery the other night.

I had already bought the Music Soundtrack but also there was the Original Score by the Composer.

after a third watching of it, only the DVD comes next.

Or am I past the DVD now...but iDigress...(I might be post-DVD so don't let that get around!)

A great mixture of orchestra, studio music and the 8-bit game sounds with actual movie dialog in their respective places make this one listen-able album. Lots of quick 1 & 2 minute long instrumentals...mood musics with occasional clips of the actors speaking their lines.

Soundtracks are fun. Ask Doctor Hooey who got me turned onto Cinemagic.
Great movie moments in small audio cues. Emotive pieces to beckon the soul & perception to excitement, remorse and love. Such things are the art of Cinema!!!

Perhaps One of the Worst Games Ever…

aka: Knowing a Challenge is Believing in its Power (play!)

I believe this:

Last Thursday’s Bruins game versus our rivals the MontrealCanadiens was one of the Worst Games Ever.

I say this:

It was Worse Than a Shutout. A 2-1 Loss, the only goal scored in the 1^stPeriod was off the faceoff, in the Montreal defensive end was was put in theirown net. PatriceBergeron was credited with the Goal. This faceoff was drawn during the BruinsPower Play.

I Know This:

Before tonight’s home-and-home tilt against Les Habs again,The Beantowne Bees are 24^th out of 30 teams on the Man Advantage,going 5-for-37 with only a 13.5% chance earning a PPG on any given night. Even without trying apparently.

And it’s a challenge.

Which are good things in a way. When they’re In The Way, they’re Overcome or Become aPersonal Boundary.

One of my Personal Points of View is my Love of Hockey ishow it applies to everyday life. About Life Being a series of Passing the Puck, Scoring the Puck, LineChanges & Queues for Restrooms & Beer during the Period breaks.

Challenges though…we live them everyday in the workplace. When met with challenges,they can define our limitations or propel us into the Next Level.

We expect ThunderSnow tonight for the Weather.

I expect ThunderSnow from the Bruins instead. What that really mean, I dunno but it’sshocking, cold and you gotta dress for it.

The ThunderSnow is actually proof of the Weather Devicetrying to root out OccupyBoston but iDigress…

Tonight, I’ll watch this game with rapt attention wearing mycolors, howling that the moon and the teevee.

Bruins/Canadiens is always a treat and I love how they booZdeno Charaeverytime he touches the Puck. It’s quite charming actually.

The challenges the Bruins faceoff against will define them,good or bad. Me too.

Hmmm...

The Unsent Email of Life.

I just started writing an email. It does not matter to whom. Or about what.
What matters is...after the idea became real, became manifest...
What matters is that I deleted it.
Instead of adding energy to an idea, I decided not to.

I'm doing that more. This Ability. I guess we Modern Folks call that Catharsis. Nonetheless sometimes I find myself simply deleting and in most cases re-pooting whatever idea I had albeit with more grace, panache and verve.

Like the Zen Master Could Say to the Grasshopper...write me a Poem. Good. Now Burn It. And Write It Again.

As I said the subject isn't the point. The who is merely superfluous and the nouns are ganging up on the verbs again...but iDigress...

It was just a choice, thinking better to say less in a certain situation...although that can be applied widely.

Awww Shucks.
He hit it big on a scratch ticket and called this "my slice".
This little gadget is wickid pissah. I've yet to "scratch the surface" pardon the bad pun. But I've never been one to want email in my pocket, and now I have provided wireless signal.
Catch That Bus? Really Slick.
Infinity Blade? Better than Dragon's Lair and I've played them both on the bus home.
And the 3-D Skymap of stars & planets that tracks the sky from your position...my favorite App.
The two-way cameras are awesome. It's got FaceTime and Pete loaded it with all the Apps he thought I'd love trying to wean me off the click wheel & it's eventual impending doom.

The “smell” of Fresh Music!

Ahhh!!!

I deserved fresh sounds and I got what I needed! iRawked the iTunes Store!

What I’ll still do is budget myself some spending money onmusic.

I give to myself in the form of the iTunes Gift Card.

I was home on Friday Night, mulling over dinner & amovie. OnDemand, I chose the 1997John Woo American opus “Face/Off”. I quickly shut it off during the credits.

I was just not into it anymore. I saw something on the movie menu that looked a bit moretasty than a shoot ‘em up. Iwatched this movie a few weeks ago & was blessed with delight.

Upon a second viewing, I then found how re-watchable thisfilm is. From it’s opening to the8-Bit Orchestra at the End Credits.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

Being a Comix geek I am utterly unfamiliar with theFunnybook Original Source. Guilty.

This whole experience was a visual & quotablemasterpiece…then there was the Music.

I had to buy the Soundtrack. Reading the credits I saw that Scott Pilgrim’s originalsongs were written by Beck.

I ended up having a good night in with a feel-goodmovie.

And yearning to get those songs for my shuffle. Populate my random with a little newer,younger sound to boot.

One of the Albums I’ve been meaning to pick up was theBook of Mormon by the creators of South Park & Avenue Q.

I laughed out loud in all the right places I guess.

It’s got what I refer to as the Potty Mouth Musical. It has that Sound to it’s Vocals &Execution that is Color-By-Numbers. I saw a Juke Box Musical last year and the delivery had that same cookiecutter quality.

The story was profane & funny. The jokes were savage. Imagine being on Broadway to hearribald revelry. I never kenned toAvenue Q anyhoo. Sure “Book” isFarcical but it’s also got the Aural Fingerprint of a Disney cartoon from the80s & 90s. I know parts ofBook of Mormon are direct send-ups of the Lion King, yeah, I get it.

I’ll give it another spin, maybe I’m being too criticalfor a first listen. But it riffson a source I barely find tolerable to begin with…

And for my continuing hunt for piece of mind…

I found a new Deepak Chopra audiobook

What can I say about shoes that are the right fit.

I’m a few hours into the 6 hour unabridged audiobook butthis was $18 bucks well spent.

How to defuse the ticking timebomb that is myself.
Well, that’s hyperbole then again I doget rather stressed out at work and lately it’s bad. So these are the messages I need to hear. His silly acronyms in context with thesubject, mnemonic devices for remembering these lessons for the key moment touse them.

I do not fear coming off as a kook.
I'm absolutely no Holy Roller.
Nonetheless, I'm possessed by the need to make sense of this wacky world through a better & different lens, ones that help bring the world into better focus for This Eric & His Life.
And part of that is being very versed in certain areas and for me it's how to lead a Better Life through Spirituality. It's not about being religious. Or even sharing belief. It's in line with what's known as the "Personal God" Experience or striving for "God Consciousness"
It helps me understand:
Who am I?
Why am I here? and...
How can I help?

So I've gleaned a lot of Sanskrit words by doing this. Great succinct words. I'll try to catch you up quick with links.
But I'm sharing here. I get this great stuff and apply it to my life.
And although I'm far from perfect, I really believe in what I've come to believe.
A lot of that comes from reading the Bhagavad Gita every morning for the past year.
I'm also under the influence of my first listening to Parker & Stone's "The Book of Mormon"

So this is what I do. I read. And when I hit a passage that resonates with me, I write an old-fashioned Tweet into the back of my Gita on the few blank pages in Biro.
I'm a Cook, a chef & it's a tough gig. Full of Stress on the mind, body & spirit and there's nothing better for the mind/body/spirit than Meditation and Rest, Mental & Physical Silence.
The Gita is a about a Warrior, about to go to war & he loses his nerve...until he's given consolation & direction through Dharma, or Cosmic Truth.
So for me, the day at work is this war. The story is meant to take place anywhere with anyone.
Being in good health, assessing at the workday and almost failing to report & deliver.
Then being given inspiration on the nature of things and the orders to "Just go perform your service and All Will Be Well". It's blissfully short yet as hard to read as Shakespeare; it takes time, patience & understanding.
The translation I read is by Mahatma Gandhi. If that matters but iDigress...
Know that when I write these initially, it is first thing on a workday AM so all I've put in my body is about 20 oz of Cafe Bustelo and a brisk walk. ;P

The Comics Gnome POOTS! about Cool Comix Chix...

Ah...The Femme Fatale. The Bad Girl.

When it comes to where this began. My love of sexy, smart and well-drawn heroines or villains...I guess I'd have to narrow it down to Power Girl and Elektra being a kid of the late 1970s, spending his pocket money on comics from a corner store spindle.

Flash Forward Literally 30 Years and what am I still doing? Spending my pocket money on comics from the bounty of Local Comics Shops in the Greater Boston Area.

This week, two new releases are the only reason to go to the funnybook bodega tomorrow.

To go and "pick up" a few hot chicks.

BATWOMAN #2

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON 9 #2

Dangerous Ladies! I warned you.

Great stories. Complicated lives. Action & Adventure.

When it comes to Batwoman, the way J.H. Williams III executes this magazine is Sexy. I can't rightfully say that the Batwoman herself or her alter-ego Kathy Kane are sexy? It's got little to do with Sex Appeal and more to do with Artistic Stylings, using panels & their shapes as the 2nd biggest character in the comic. Layouts that speak to you. very daring art style. Clean lines. Bold colors. Very in-your-face. It's the comic I'm currently re-reading. I got the collected DETECTIVE COMICS story ELEGY in trade paperback and broke down and got the Zero Issue that came out months ago because I was so switched onto the style.

When it comes to Buffy...she's Buffy. Hot chick in her mid-20s. Petite. Sounds like my type but iDigress.

Is Buffy Sexy? The Answer is Hazy. I can't say she's not hot, or at least the photorealistic rendering of Sarah Michelle Gellar's likeness rights are as equally pretty as the actress. I think she's too busy kicking ass to be hot. (There are titles that appeal to the T&A sure. I loved them as a kid. The sheer sight of a nipple...don't get me started. But really)

Buffy, Sexy? Hmmm...maybe no? It doesn't make it bad but the dynamic lives of these female characters as they balance their lives and their fictional problems.

I guess I read BATWOMAN for the art over the story. This story arc is just starting so why pass judgement, we'll see where it lands.

With BUFFY SEASON 9...it's just one of my shows. It's my Vampire Show. 'Nuff Said.

As Buffy Herself said to the "Big Bad" of Season 8 cleverly named Twilight, making fun of the Teen Drama Franchise with the villain's name in usual pop-culture context, "my Vampire was cooler".

They both have issues, they both have gifts. They got family drama, dating problems and the role of kicking the ass off of evil.

They are great monthlies and I'm tuned in.

And although this panel is from CASANOVA LUXURIA, this sums up my feelings for...

I bought the latest floppy bran-spankin' new last week of the mega-awesome series.

Lemme frame CASANOVA for you succinctly.

Casanova Quinn was kidnapped from his Universe.

He was stolen by a Big Bad for obviously Very Very Evil Reasons...to replace the Casanova Quinn killed in Another Universe! The trick is: in this Other Universe, Casanova was a Hero. A real Super Spy working with the Angels.
Our Casanova though...he's a bit of a shameless renegade in opposition to the forces of good.

Hilarity Ensues. Lots of Sex, Violence, Nudity, and Mayhem. Casanova is a must-read for any one with taste for high-octane yet artfully quilled ultra-violence.
In addition I simply love Cass' twin sister. Zephyr in this Other Universe...is the shameless renegade working with the Big Bad. This time his beloved sister is just like him.

Too much like him.

As opposed to BUFFY SUMMERS or KATHY KANE, I will say Zephyr Quinn makes me wanna be 2-D. Ha! Read More About CASANOVA here and hopefully you'll be hooked too very soon.

How Did Your Hand Get Infected?

It started off small. On a Wednesday PM.

Originally I thought it was an ingrown hair pimple on my knuckle but it started getting warm, turgid & shiny by bedtime.

It ended up the next morning feeling as though I'd broken my hand...again.

My Hand Pistol went from a Race Starting Gun to a Colt Python .357 Magnum! The index finger was swollen like a sausage & red like a sunburn, halfway down my hand.

I reported to work. I showed them my hand. I then went to the hospital.

I'm a cook and one day I'll grow up to be a real Chef!

Nonetheless, a professional kitchen is a workplace fraught with Chemical, Physical and Biological hazards from Fire, to Knives, to Bacteria to name a few. Minor cuts & burns are commonplace & part of the gig.

Put them all together irresponsibly, it can be a recipe for disaster although we are ever vigilant against happenstance such as these.

But then again sometimes these thing just happen...

I have a theory. I suffered a weird but accidental burn in the area under where the infection started and has ended up making it's "Qadaffi's Last Stand".

If you've ever taken a hot rack from the oven to move to a different level, then you'll use oven gloves. This is the action I performed.

Although the right-handed glove I used was wet from water on the inside. I was wearing a vinyl glove as well so I didn't notice the wetness until it was too late...

From a screeching HOT oven, water turns to steam at 212deg very quickly with the contact of a 425deg metal rack. It was as if the wet oven glove became an extension of that very darn hot oven rack in the form of steam & hot moisture.

It's called Thermal Conductivity. Therefore what I have is a small steam burn that I really thought was a "bug bite" when it happened.

(also that it's a Cook's Fact that steam burns are the worst. They cook you from the inside out, steam turns the entire sphere of its impact its temperature and with the permeability of skin, et al...iDigress...)

So what I got was a blister that arose like 2-3 days later, in the shape of the side rail of the oven rack. It lost its roof too quickly and I'm usually very very good with blisters...I'll do the gross thing with a sterilized needle and drain from the base so you don't lose the roof! I'm one of those douches who advise this! Irony?

And then something Got In. A bacteria. From ANYWHERE! Could have been work, home, a handshake or a restroom. I constantly am washing my hands at work and we are required wear gloves too. The Human Body is a remarkably sealed vessel. We're full of fluids that keep us going, that need to be kept in & in working order. The Hindu's refers to the Male Body as the City of Nine Gates, the eyes (2), the nostrils (2), the ears (2), the mouth (1), the genial opening (1) and the anus (1). Like with ribs, I believe women have one more ;)

This "wound" developed directly above the burn scab, on top of my knuckle, imagine if you can an ersatz Green Lantern ring of grossness. As I said, it started off small...mistaken for an ingrown hair pimple. The infection retreated to whence it began to & now is Siege Warfare.

This book was endlessly read as a small child, I had several of the late 70s volume by Spencer Johnson. And the story of Pasteur used the metaphor of Toy Soldiers to represent bacteria and antibodies and that's an imagery that's stuck with me.

Cuts & Burns are an Occupational Hazard. I guess I'll believe in the words of my gurus when they suggest, "Within Every Mistake is the Seed of Progress". I call this an Emergency Stop. Something in my personal Geist is telling me to slow down. I'm too high strung. I'm too erratic and I need to drop it down a few gears. The Nurse in the ER checked my blood pressure at the start & the end. She looked at me wryly, "stressed, huh"? I was about to answer "how'd you know?" but I grinned and said "Yup."

It's a Conspiracy of the Cosmos to get me to rest, relax, meditate, reassess, plot, strategize, de-stress and the opportunity to change my own personal sobriety policy especially with not being able to drink for 10 days minimum during the antibiotics.

So far, so good. Let's see tomorrow when I return to work.

It's basically the SmartPhone version of my inexpensive yet wickid reliable Kyocera Jax phone I got about 2 years ago for $9.99! The Seven-Button interface is the same, the menus are the same, the alarm clock that I depend on every AM is the same. The 5, 15, 30, 60 min. timers I count on from everyday cooking tasks to leaving to catch the Bus is the same. It uses the same power cord! Now I got a spare.

(wear your Pink, Save the Ta-Tas!). No moving parts on the Candybar Phones which is what I need and I know my last phone put up with the abuse I give my poor gadgets.

If you recall, a phone like this was real hot poop 4-5 years ago.
Now the Power of the SmartPhone is in the Hands of the Po' People! $30 a month Virgin Mobile, No Contract Package just released: 1500 mins talk, 1500 SMS texts and 30MB of Web Access. I felt "Now" was the time to upgrade Phone & Service.

I call dub this "CrackBerry CRUNCH!" for us South Park fans...

Wewere BBQing at Doctor Hooey’s with a Round Table filled with who had ended upstaying ‘about 10 of us, enjoying the Night, the Food and the Company. And the evening weather after a warm,sunny day was comfortable to the tee-shirt’d after the Sun rounded over thehorizon. What a beautifulnight…clear moonlight sky, stars abundant. As Dave Bowman said, “Oh my God, it’s Full of Stars!”

Iask Dr. Hooey to Produce his iPhone…his point-at-the-sky starchart is myfavorite App. Makes me feel likeStar Trek. And popping through thetrees, as bright as the Star of Bethlehem was the planet Jupiter. Confirmed by Hooey’s Great Gadget.

I’vebeen reading Sky & Telescope every few weeks to keep track of the visibleplanets I tend to see before dawn. Also planets are just as visible to the nekkid eye after sundown, attheir peak photosensitivity predicated upon our parallax but iDigress…

Ihad a hunch Jupiter was out there although what I saw in the sky had metransfixed as a frog on a Lilly pad to celestial circumstances.

Hooey& I meet early to go shopping and start prepping. I’m a gleeful co-conspirator.

Icannot cook anything for anyone with a bacterial infection starting from ablister on the first metacarpal of my right index finger. Cellulitus from a Blister that lostit’s roof.

Iwent to the Hospital Thursday AM with a hand I thought I broke again & anindex finger the size & look of a Hillshire Farms Polska Kielbasa. Something was wrong and I was smartenough to get it treated right away. The nurse immediately stuck an IV Drip of antibiotics in my arm &bade me swallow a horsepill of another. For 10 Days, I have to take 2 different antibiotics and a hugeMotrin. It’s getting better.
Nonetheless I cannot drink anybeer!

TheHand still hurts but it’s nothing like this was Thursday & FridayMornings. I couldn’t hold aknife. And I had an infectiousboil! I couldn’t work and I can’tcook for the BBQ as per the plan!

Sothe BBQ took on a different thing for me due to my “injury”. But Hooey needed my help and he was myhands. I asked him to do this& do that in his kitchen and within 2 hours, we had a bounty of delicious,homemade food. We made burgersliders, white trash pizza and sweet potato fries that overcooked into perfectsweet potato crisps.

Ishowed Pete my method of my Weekly Ragu pizza/pasta sauce. The bare bones of it. 3/4 of the White Trash Pizzas wereeaten…I felt good about that dish (but I ate three!! ;P).

Andthe plate we’re proudest about, the grilled marinated chicken.

Hooey’sgoing to Istanbul, TURKEY for business again and wanted tomake something inspired by his trip.

Then,the biggest lightbulb goes “On!”over my head…a dish I learned from a good chef, nipped from another good chefwhile they were camping.

Bakingthe Chicken is a little better than grilling so the marinade doesn’t fall off& burn on the coals.

Westarted off with 4+ lbs of boneless chix breast cut into equal 4-5 oz cutlets,we pounded them out a little too before we butchered.

LiquidBase:

2pints of Fage brand Plain Greek Yogurt

>6oz. Canola Oil for viscosity

Afew squeezes of lemon juice to taste and to loosen up the marinade to get tothe pourablity of mayonnaise over the gel-like custard of yogurt.

Wereasoned that a little honey would go a long way in this base but we had noneto add for sweetness to balance the saltiness and the pucker of lemon juice. We chose dark Karo syrupover the umami-loaded molasses. It could have taken away from the marinade but we added alittle more Salt & Lemon juice to correct. If no honey, don’t worry about it.

Alittle S&P too. To taste.

Freshherbs:

Wehad were the fronds of the fresh fennel in the fridge, fresh parsley and freshdill.

Aboutthree good handfuls of each. (ifyou had mint only one handful but that could be a wonderful addition althougheasily overpowering…we did not use mint in our marinade)

Thiswill give the marinade vibrant green & fresh flavors.

Wealso used finely sliced scallion as well.

Spices:
Paprika, lots to taste but don’t use a heavy hand and if you add too muchpaprika, add more yogurt (or sour crème if you run out of yogurt).

S&P,kosher salt & fresh ground coarse black pepper.

Cumin.

(alsosome yellow curry powder plays very well in this)

andthe Ultimate Ingredient for this…

CrumbledFeta Cheese.

Ihate feta cheese. I love thischicken dish…Dig? The fetabakes/cooks unto the chicken. Grilling you lose lots of it (reserve extramarinade to baste after flipping to keep that precious cheese!)

Thisis one of the tastiest chicken marinades that I’ve ever happened upon.

Andit was all improved using what we had in Pete & Eliza’s fridge.

MarinadeTime: < 1 Hour and Reserve leftover for basting when grilling/use a rubberspatula and scrape off onto all chix when baking. The cheese browns and just makes a new dimension onto thegood old bird.

TheEntire Time in the preparation & enjoying of this great Columbus Day BBQ,playing music, being DeeJay, permission of Doctor Hooey…

Iraised my hand, Posty & Hooey pointed theirs at me. And I think I blushed. I have to admit mostly everyone thereone way or the other contributed the bulk of my digital collection and itseclectic randomness.

Oncethe Identity was confirmed as myself as the music’s source, I became the answerand sounding board of the playlist. But by 10PM, we’re all out on the porch, drinking beer, goofing on anX-Mas trees and listening to tunes, singling along, talking about greatsongs. We were enrapt under thestars with the best music conversations.

Theywere all music people too, mostly. Musicians and Aficionados All.

Evenon the Injured List it’s good to know I can still contribute to a BBQ where Ican’t drink beer or handle food. It was a really nice night with old friends & new. Delightful!

Hopefullyin the near-future, we can get an “iRawk” Hawt Scoop from Dr. Hooey who on theday of Steve Jobs passing sent flowers in the form of money from the buying thenewest of iPod nano.

Nonetheless, Good Times Rolls like Stones.

I just spent the past two sick days off watching lots of great television and this really nailed my soul, to speak.

HBO's 2011 2-part documentary, directed by Martin Scorsese

George Harrison: Living in the Material World.

I love documentaries. I love the Beatles. George is and has always been my favorite Beatle.

This was a great use of under 4 hours. And they talk to everybody....EVERYBODY!

What a great show. Intimate look into the life of perhaps the closest thing I can come to as my own Jedi Master when it comes to being a Spiritual Person. I follow my own Road I know but to see George really realize Dharma and attempt to live it Rightly makes me feel as though I've been ripping off his playbook, without the success mind you. Perhaps we share an angelic archtype.

Under my Meditation this AM I made a really neat Beatles Metaphor for the Experience.

It's a metaphor so the more you stretch, the more it loses its power.

Feature This: The Body has a Voice, the Mind has a Voice and the Spirit too has a voice. Now take the Heart, literally, figuratively, metaphorically as well as "The Drummer".

I came up with The Elegant Beatles Equation of Meditation:

John & Paul are the Mind & Body. Which one is which doesn't matter on the writing credits. They both have their voice. George though...George is the Spirit. While Ringo obviously is the Heart, in all its connotations.

Sometimes there is that legendary three-part harmony. Sometimes one is taking the lead while the other two harmonize & weave.

Then there are the George Harrison songs that defined the Later Beatles from the Early Beatles.

So imagine if you will...Meditation Being as one of those George Songs such as Here Comes the Sun or Something, the Body & Mind having voices in harmony will let the Spirit take center stage and find that Gap where the Silence of Meditation arises...all awhile the Heart keeps pumping it's backbeat, blood & Light.

A Worthwhile Movie experience as a life-long Beatles Fan.

The New Phone Blues...

I love my phone.
I love my service too.
Nonetheless, it's getting old. Wear & Tear.
The surface is getting indiscernible with the amount of scuffs after almost 2 years of usage.
My simple "crappy cheap" phone that I love. No bells & whistles so to speak but all phone.
And it is my alarm clock. And timer too. I religiously use the 1 hr, 30 min 15 min & 5 min timers on my phone.

Also I have the need to Tweet. Just to feed into a private account. To Micro-Manage Myself to recapitulate the timeline of my day to my Chef. I'm doing so now with a marble Comp Book but Twitter would be a hell of a lot more efficient.
So I need a phone plan with unlimited SMS, and a QWERTY to pull it off.

And the Bus Schedule will always be there. My newest IntrePoop Freind is Next Bus Dot Com. I can't get this through my current phone.
So an upgrade is deemed necessary. Matt's Droids. Peter's iPhones...SmartPhones are a big choice AND to be Frugal & Wise!

I read one good, solid Sunday AM Boston Globe by my Jedi Master, Kevin Paul Dupont. A really good look innto the minds & motives of repeating a Stanley Cup. Starting off his interviews is one great subject: Brendan Shanahan.
By the end of the article, KDP gives us a slice of what's Best in his writing after all these years...a noir-like quality such as the gumshoe on the case. The beat writer in his constant hunt of clever & winning. "The puck drops Thursday night, sometime after 7, once the franchise’s sixth Stanley Cup banner has been hoisted to the rafters. The Lightning will be in town Saturday night, followed by a matinee visit Monday by the Avalanche. The beat begins, following a season that bears worth repeating."

To further butcher today’s KDP column...he started off with Shanny. Who first identified that league parity after “the Long Offseason”, the ’04-’05 Lockout Non-Season that Changed NHL Hockey into its current awesomeness.
Shanahan believes what makes repeating these days the hardest of all is the pervasive parity in the league, a factor that has intensified greatly since 2005, when the NHL dramatically lowered the age of free agency and implemented a mandatory salary cap. During the big winger’s salad days in Detroit, when he and the Red Wings won the Cup three times (1997, ’98 and ’02), Shanahan heard myriad theories on what made it so difficult to repeat. All of them held some merit, he said, except one…
“Complacency, you can forget that,’’ said Shanahan, now 42 years old and the NHL’s chief disciplinarian. “Anyone who thinks complacency is part of [what makes it difficult to repeat] has never won the Cup. So the Prognosis is that a Cup Defense post Lockout is tragically improbable due to the field being too equal. The odds are someone else will get it but that were the odds of getting it anyway? Forget it, I’m no gambling man to begin with.

BATWOMAN #1 in the DCnU.

The Comics Gnome pooted this in my latest stack as well. I thought I would only be rebooted with one DCnU funnybook.
I didn't fall for anything...no marketing ploy.
I simply received & read an incredible comic.

BATWOMAN #1 loses writer Greg Rucka although retains it's artistic keystone; J. H. Williams III.
As co-writer and artist. He draws & inks his own art that he's co-writing.
Now Greg Rucka is a really great funnybook crime drama producer, the reality is he's gone & off the story.
And the show biz maxim is...
the show must go on

once I thumbed through BATWOMAN #1 from the shelf at the FunnyBppk Bodega, I knew she was a keeper. I know this comic is by gender a girl, therefore "she". I totally checked out Batwoman and she'll very well-drawn. Kinda like Jessica Rabbit and everything that entails mixed into a Broken Solider archetype. I have no other descriptive words that bridge the concept of the modern DC Batmwoman.

I'm on tap for BATWOMAN from the Stoopid DCnU monthly until it runs out or J. H. Williams III stops drawing it...or get replaced by an Astonishing Battery! I'm in. Good stuff. I mean only Grant Morrison & Frank Quietly can surpass Willams III's art & panel layouts. The art is SICK! It is GREAT! It makes you believe in the power of serialized stories with sequential drawn panels of dialog & narrative.
BATWOMAN #1 is a compete package.

As usual, at the last minute I get the call.
"Whatcha doing tonight?"
It was Meathead. It was Friday Night. And my Big Plan was to get buzzed & go to bed early after yet another tough week and a bad day at the Office. If anyone was ready for the weekend, it was Yours Truly.
So we're off once again to the Gahhden...with his Missus & Stepson who I refer to as the Little Green Man. Being wise parents, Meathead & The Missus drop their infant & toddler off at his Mom's place. We then made fun of people who brought their infants & toddlers to the game, seeing one guy leave in the 1st period with a red-faced, leaky eye & nose 5 year old. Poor guy.
Once Again To Denise, Meathead's Mother...Thanks Ma!!! For the tickets and the best friend. ;P

Raising the Cup high "with" Tim Thomas before the game. Outside of the Pro Shop where I just bought a Tim Thomas Winter Classic 2010 jersey on sale for $75...it is XXL but I do not care.
And I also got my Stanley Cup Champions 2011 hat.

Wait for the "WOOOO!"...celebrating a Bruins goal with Meathead,
Apparently I got on the JumboTron again.
Little Green Man informed me, I was O'Blivious to it.
It was a really full house for a Pre-Season Game. Meathead & I actually like going to the pre-season games and we could really say this was the first time a practice game felt like a real season match. Scrappy skirmishes & scrums nonetheless no real fights as is the case with pre-season tilts, with up-&-comers trying to impress the coach exchanging blood, knuckles and black eys for benchspace but iDigress...
Tim Thomas was in goal and most of the "A" Squad was dressed.
The Bruins were able to overcome the NY Islanders and win 6-3.
Pretty fun game, really great seats. And as always, the best company.
In Addition...a Huge Crowd! A Sea of Black & Gold. It wasn't a sell-out or a completely packed house, there were plenty of empty seats in the 1st & 2nd Periods. Got Kevin Paul DuPont of the Boston Globe saying there were 16,555 in attendance last night. I wonder if that was ticket sales or did he perform a headcount? Reading KDP for years I know he can embellish but by the 3rd period I think that number came pretty close.

I got a good chuckle from my Section when after the National Anthem & before face-off, there is a moment when it almost gets quiet...this natural pause, a calm before the Storm so to speak...
I grabbed that opportunity and in my Best Bruins Loud Voice I yell out, "THANK YOU!!!"
I think the Bruins heard me loud & clear...pretty much everyone did.

This is my Prime Example. Liam Neeson. The Actor who played Qui-Gon Jinn in Episode I, was not available to shoot for Episode III due to a prior commitment, aka Batman Begins.
It's been years since Episode III's release and if Lucas is going to "fix" something, why not the scene in the novelization of Episode III when Yoda is speaking to the Blue Ghost Qui-Gon on the asteroid at the end of the movie.

9/11...10 Years Gone

Hello Dear OCHO,

Mostly Every Year in the on-going 9 Years of OCHO, I've made some kind of 9/11 tribute.
To recapitulate & remember. To recount. To perhaps avoid embellishment and keep a consistent story of what happened that Fateful Day. What I'll do and go reread those previous posts of the usual utterances such as seeing the American Flag against the clear blue sky at 7AM coming out of my apartment on Prospect Hill and passing the chess piece monument.
I used to republish an email I got from a former family friend, Joey was living in the dorms of NYU at the cusp of Ground Zero.
Getting pancakes with Dr. Hooey at Bickford's then going to JRBarnes' place for a schmoke & a few brews...enjoying American Freedoms, eh?

The WWII War Memorial at the corner of my street, the Henry O. Hansen Iwo Jima Memorial has its Flag at Half-Mast. I see it from my window on this clear, beautiful September 11th morn. Much like that day 10 Years Ago when the proverbial poop hit the fan or the literal plane hit the buildings. I'll avoid my usual joke about the George W. Bush Iraq War Memorial being a Bronzed Oil Derrick or the statue of the MASSPORT Employee Shrugging their shoulders, holding a cup o' Dunkins in one hand & a scratch ticket in the other while letting terrorist through the metal detector to steal two planes under their noses from Logan International Airport...or did I just make those bad jokes again...

I'm avoiding the press today. There's something about this decade memorial services that bothers me. Constant for this past week in every news outlet...embracing the bad memories but also. What else are we to do today?
I dunno...maybe a National Holiday. Call it Freedom Day...that's just what the economy needs is another paid day off in September right?

It is September 11th in America. Osama Bin Laden is now dead. The Wars in Iraq & Afghanistan have forever made the price of Gasoline what it is today...I always snicker at the opening credits of HBO's The Sopranos when Tony drives past a gas Station & the price of Unleaded is .97 cents a gallon, which could have been shot sometime in 1998 before the January 1999 premiere
Today in the USA the average price of petrol/gallon is $3.665

So on this 9/11, Ten Years Gone I reflect and wear my time-worn 9/11 tee-shirt, proudly displaying the Black Dog of Nantucket
against the Star & Stripes of Old Glory. I think of the fear and horror of the victims & fallen heroes. In past OCHO 9/11's I've said "Never Forget, Never Forgive". So Ten Years Gone, how do I feel about that statement in itself...

Forgiveness is a natural outcome of Love. So I guess forgiveness is part of "Love Thy Neighbor" right? Blanket Christian-style forgiveness is a bit uppity even in the road my own Enlightenment. Nonetheless, I know it's an ingredient in an age-old recipe...forgiveness is as integral to Love as Yeast is to Beer. It's a part of the process. Do we as America forgive only after a Military, Cultural & Economic Victory? It's a very American paradigm for such a crusading "Christian" nation to have. Quite a paradox.

It's already started. It's "Sister" Spinoff title ******* & FAITH came out this past week and both tell the story of Season 9.
What's up with the asterisks on ******* & Faith? Giving it away would be criminal. Against the Geek Code. It'll Spoil the End of Season 8. Hey, I'm still not spoiled on TV's LOST...I'm gonna get to it someday and I'd like that the end wasn't ruined for me. In fact I've only seen the first three episodes of that other famous teevee show that legions of fans swarm to like moths to a flame.
Why Spoil the Fun? The Comics Gnome heard a Rumor that Neither OCHO's Very Own CrackedKiwi Nor El Post OR KAREN MAE! has yet to finish Buffy Season 8! I mean having your hands full of new parenthood is a fine excuse...the Comics Gnome Accepts This.
All FunnyBooks Are New Stories If You've Yet To Read Them is the Gnome's Maxim.

Season 8 ran for just under 4 years in 43 issues. Season 9 plans about 50 issues in Two Years. How? The Twin Titles of Buffy and the London-based team of...you guessed it ******* & Faith!
It's a very good way to get your new episode of a serial. Buffy as a comicbook shipped monthly and was consistent. Art on Buffy Season 9 will be handled by Georges Jaunty who was the mainstay on Season 8, giving the Buffy Seasons Comics a unified visual feel. Jaunty goes from Photo-Realistic to Cartoon on a Dime. Nonetheless, he's got a good eye for action & motion, sacrificing realism to suit the rough & tumble world of Demons, Soldiers, Vampires, Mages & Slayers.

Buffy & The Scoobies are now residing in San Francisco seeing Sunnydale got swallowed by the Hellmouth in the Season 7 "Series" Finale but iDigress...

The Comics Gnome POOT'd an amazing stack of FunnyBooks this weekend on me. Getting comics, especially when lapsed can be a bit like hunting puzzle pieces.
DC's fantastic XOMBI ends at #6 came out last week & was on the top of my stack.
Earlier I hunted down #s 3 and 5...although I'm Still Missing #2!!! I got it on order now so I'll finally get to read this eye-fetching, clever & macabre story of supernatural suspense! This 6-issue run I can predict will be collected into a nifty trade paperback worth your attention.

Irving Fraser pencils, inks & colors his work. This is a simple taste...the whole book looks this tight & John Rozum's dialog is snappy and his story creepy. Fun, fun, fun!

This Stack to my Pleasure I found two MARVEL magazines, both AVENGERS titles, both Exemplary Done-In-One Stories.

NEW AVENGERS ANNUAL #1 (2011) by Brian Michael Bendis, art by Gabrielle Della'otto.
I cannot say enough good things about this Annual. Firstly, I love Annuals. More Bang for the Buck, catches up quick on "current" events and just a Fat Funnybook. This comic though is what I'd suggest to Kiwi for a MARVEL comic. I was asked and I did say "anything AVENGERS by Bendis". Well, the proof of the pudding's in the taste, kid. The First 6 splash pages are a history lesson of past Avenger Events that have shaped the MARVEL Status Quo of it's "Current Now".
Former Avenger Simon "Wonder Man' Williams thinks the Avengers are a Bad Idea.

Warren Ellis is a MARVEL Bullpen Work-For-Hire Writer. And he writes perhaps the Best Superhero Team Comics whether it's a property you know or one he's invented, such as the AUTHORITY or the Seven Guns of BLACK SUMMER.
In a contract with MARVEL and obligated to produce, Ellis' goal with his 4-6 issues of SECRET AVENGERS is to tell Done-In-One stand alones that all read together as well. It's antics & hijinks with the Situation merely being the backdrop to the interaction of this 4-man squad of the elite but hush-hush Super-Soldier Steve Rogers Secret Avengers. This is the kind of comic you'd pass over to a friend. Accessible, fun & dynamic.

CASANOVA: AVARITIA I, written by Matt Fraction, art by Gabriel Ba on ICON Comics.
This is my first foray into the twisted Sci-Fi, Time-Travel Ultra-Glam Spy World of Casanova Quinn. This is in fact I believe my first ever book by MARVEL Super-Writer Matt Fraction as well. CASANOVA by Fraction is one of those funnybooks "I've Yet To Get" and has been on that list for a while...the coolest, best comicbook I wasn't reading. Warren Ellis raves about it on his website, other respected reviewers cannot shut up about CASANOVA. So what a great place to start than this weeks brand-new story and issue #1 of Avaritia. Trippy, man...wickid trippy. Great cartoony art. Ultra-Violence, Full-Frontal Nudity, Bad language....aka: My Cup o" Tea. Color me Interested & now Obligated to Fill In Those Puzzle Pieces and hunt down the rest.
It's so good it's gonna need several more reading to fully grok...I mean there is a narrative caption box containing nothing but a series of numbers in a Time Code I've Yet To Figger Out...it's slightly over my head and I Like It!

ACTION COMICS #1 written by Grant Morrison, art by Rags Morlaes.
I bit. My contribution to the DCnU. It's a Grant Morrison SUPERMAN story so hey...chances are it's going to be great. And I've giving it that chance. This will be my only DCnU Magazine while Grant Writes it. There's nothing much to say about ACTION #1 besides it's well-structured and solid. It's Built with Handles for us to Jump On. We Meet Everybody Too. It's set Five Years Ago in the DCnU's Past when Clark first gets to Metropolis so we're seeing Lois, Jimmy & Luthor for the first time all over again.
Get ready for the 21st Century Superman standing up for the "Little Guy".

And the last DC Classic Funnybook I'll Purchase Fresh is...

BATMAN INCORPORATED #8 written by Grant Morrison, art by Scott Clark & Dave Beatty
Clever, Concise, Done-In-One to boot.
More TRON than TRON set in the confines of Internet 3.0, a WayneTech creation has billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne & Guests trapped in a Digital World while avatars of Batman & Oracle save the Circuit Streets of Virtual Gotham. Smart, quick, worth re-reads. And the art...this lush, tight, clean art...the in-joke of the Red Skies, the firewalls with graffiti, the Scott Pilgrim of it all with Power Ups in this Video Game Life & 1UPs. The sheer imagination it takes to pull this off. it reads like a great disaster story, a Towering Inferno in CyberSpace.
Grant has a 12-part finale to his Leviathan Story line but all signs point to that BATMAN INC #8 is the last of this series, getting lost in the shuffle with the DCnU New 52 of all issue #1s.
Grant promises "tears, lots of tears" in his BATMAN INC. 12-parter that is forth-coming and I think will be the opposite bookend to the Grant Morrison BATMAN story started back in BATMAN #655, September 2006, BATMAN & SON, Pt. 1, "Building a Better Batmobile", a mega-storyline started over 5 Years Ago. Things Come Full Circle...

Another half hour of random interviews, I stumble Through the Links & find a one-hour long Australian documentary on the Southeast Asian leg of their '72 tour.

Completely early 70s BBC TV quality but a lot like Spinal Tap if you pick up what I'm putting down.

I watched two of their full length feature releases...all on YouTube, mind you.
To Finish Saturday Night of Sports Medicine, (meaning the Brett Favre Cocktail of Ice Bags & Vics).
I watched the 1970 film Gimme Shelter, the full-length feature I've seen before but not in my adult life recently and certainly not after seeing Altamont through Keith's Hindsight.

Not necessarily Just A Free Stones Show in early December 1969...this Outdoor Event was being Documented as the West Coast version of Woodstock which happened only 5 months previous!

What a wonderful time to Meditate!
I'm actually ridiculously awful at Meditation, choosing Suds over Aums when I get home from work in the Afternoon. I feel one has to choose One or the Other. That One Should Not Imbibe Alcohol Then Meditate.
Grass is a Completely Different Story but iDigress...

And it's a Beautiful early September Sunday Morning. Calm, I'd Like to keep it that way.
The Gurus of my Audiobooks both Suggest 30 minutes in the AM and 30 in the PM to start on the course of a more balanced existence. 30 minutes in the AM is tough for me. That would mean 3:30AM. As we say here on OCHO, "Do The Math, Mouthbreathers!".
As I've said above, 30 minutes in the PM well...that's Me, being Selfish.
Sure I could do this or that but I'm not about "Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda".

So this placid Sunday AM I "rev" up with a little latin black coffee and sit down to be absolutely still for 30 frakkin' minutes.
It's been a while but I interface easily with the Self.
Nonetheless as usual, the Thoughts clamor for attention like Needy Children...
(Where Do These Thoughts "Go" When I'm Not Thinking About Them")
or rather stuff on a rug...take it to the porch and shake it off.
A good passage does that. Memorize a passage from a spiritual text that resonates with you.
Passage Meditation.

I hate defining myself and always have. I guess I'm what you'd call a Mystic
I had that Mystical Moment. A Clarity, a Moment of Zen as we Westerners Love to Joke...

I'm using my passage, as to raise the shields of my spaceship USS Consciousness against the now-accumulating thoughts, entering my Sector at Warp Speed...Set Phasers for Calm!
It Happens. You Have Stillness & Inner Quiet...Then a Thought Arrises.
And out of Natural Mitosis, this one fertile thought turns Legion becoming Everything That Has Been On Your Mind in the Waking Day.
The reciting of your passage hits the reset button of your inner dialog.
As the orchestra conductor taps his wand to ready the band.

My Passage is from The Bhagavad Gita 2:14.
I've learned it in butchered transliterated Sanskrit from this source.
It's where Shri Krishna tells the distracted hero of his duty but explaining the Nature of Life distilled into a Single Succinct Sentence.
All You Sense & Experience...is Changing Seasons, is Pain & Pleasure, it Comes & Goes, is Temporary & Disappearing...therefore, Endure Them.

So when the Gallery of my Inner Quietude Gets Noisy, this is the Gavel to Silence the Courtroom.

Then an original thought comes to me, ironically enough that we're trying to quiet thoughts...and as cream comes to the top of milk, do these great thoughts arise. It's an Instinctual Processing, a Passive Thinking versus the over-active processing with the turgid "normal" mind.
All Words Spoken are Information & Energy. I'm Down With That. Words Have Importance. The Ability to Define Sense Objects, to Command Them with Names & Terms is what it truly means to Wield God's Free Will...
So If words are Information & Energy...Then when I'm repeating this passage, I am becoming one with Krishna & everybody else in Space/Time who has Spoken Those Exact Same Words. I see it as only Space/Time mitigating the people and places from the unity of the Energy & Information of the Phrase.
If the Information & Energy of Krishna's Wisdom is the Waveform, then We Uttering It is the collapsing of the particle from its wave form if what I'm interpreting my layman's QED rightly.
Since the Information & Energy come "from Krishna" through the Gita, that makes me in sync with that.
I guess you can apply this to any Wisdom.
Become the Christ, the Rasul, or the Buddha by Believing in their Information & Energy...and singing along. Just Tune Into the Wavelength, right? ;P
For a Moment...a Split Second I Kinda Felt Like Krishna...a one-ness, a Unity. Sublime...

That was the moment of Zen. Realizing this connection to the spoken word of the "Lord" on a Sunday AM, Meditating.

This Happened Yesterday. On a Thursday. Before Labor Day Week-End.
Calling Out Sick on the Friday of labor Day Weekend usually gets your Holiday Pay for Monday Taken Away.

Thursday, 4PM
If I was thinking I was having a Bad Day at Work.
It ended on being prescribed & given 2 Vicotin on an Empty Stomach.

Thursday, 6AM
OWWWCHHH!!!

Touchdown! 5:35AM. I walk thought the doors and enter my Cafe. I am the Break'est Cook at an MIT Cafe. It's a Hot Corner, not really a dining hall but a high-volume eatery more in line with a small food court yet the span of the wall is all one team. Stategically located in a high-traffic area, very visible and everything in line-of-sight. We're only open for service until 3PM, Mon-Fri so logically this is Dream Gig for a Cook & Chef.
Well every workplace has their own inner obstacles & torments. And as Jean-Paul Satre said "Hell is Other People",
Rev Sully sez, "Hell is Other Co-Workers".

I work with very special people, very diverse cultures and with mixed genders & ages; it truly is an All-American Melting Pot.
It's Neither as it's said Male-Dominated nor White-Dominated and Agism doesn't exist on the service level yet it is a Labour-Intensive Job. Lots of Different & Sometime Clashing Opinions and Workstyles in an ever-churning caldron of motion, emotion, preparation, execution, cleaning & serving. It has unique demands of the Skill Set and the Body/Mind/Sprit.
The Body in particular...

Gawddammit...this is gonna suck.
Okay. Feature the Scene. On a three-shelf rack, in the center rack about 3 feet off the floor is a free-standing rack for the drying & storing of our PE Cutting Boards.
Something like this

to store something like this

While pulling mine from the hook handle in a safe, hygenic & proper fashion, another cutting board, still wet & improperly stowed, shoved into a rack slot only made for accommodate a Single Board...
this second board slid out along with my board for it was adhered by its wetness and since it was not being properly held by it's hook handle...or held at all!
This second board fell according to the Laws of Gravity and corner-first landed on the uppermost joint of the Big Toe of my Right Foot, square on top of the Philanges Proximales.
I yelped like a scalded puppy. I understood right away that "this is gonna suck". I make my living on my feet.
And the worst part is...you can't do much for a broken toe!

Thursday, 6:10AM
After informing the managers of my injury...I get back to work. Again, what can you do for a broken toe. Service must be met. It had yet to start to really hurt and I ultimately met the demands of my job and manned-Up. I Soldiered On. I got my job done. I stayed until 12Noon and then got to the Hospital for some Candid Pics of my hurt Tootsie.

Thursday, 3:30PM
In all the excitement, I neglected to eat either break'est or lunch. I was hungry, and waiting for the word from the doctor in the ER. Earlier I was given a few Vicotins for pain. They're now crowding the periphery of my senses.
The Doctor Comes. No Broken Bones. A really nasty bash he refers to as a "Crush Injury". Yes I am Injured, no I am not Broken.

Friday, 9AM
And for This Labor Day, I came to some conclusions about work, after being Injured at Work.
Flip Your Problem! What am I doing wrong? Why is Service Stressing Me Out!?!?
And It Came To Me Since It Was Already There...One Guest At A Time. Nen. Let The Queue Happen. Nen. One Guest At A Time. Nen. Allow the Chefs & Managers to Experience & Realize the need for Manned Help at Certain Peak Times...I usually work Solo & when Help Arrives, it's too late and the guests end up seeing old time vaudeville. Nen. Stress is When Needs Are Not Being Met...Identify Your Need, Make a Request. Nen.

Nen is a Japanese word that has a few definitions, as a homophone over a few different kanji or spellings.
Nen in my context is the Japanese word for "Single-Mindedness". A focus that defines Reality. I learned this from the book The Spirit of Aikido by Kisshomaru Ueshiba, son of the Founder O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba also the First Doshu or Grand Sensei of Organized Aikido.

I count this as one of the books that changed my life and I still read quite frequently.
This same concept is brought up by Mohatmas Gandhi in his Bhagavad Gita which I read every morning. Gandhi refers to this quality as Ekagrata.
Single-Mindedness...the Sense Object & Target for Your Chi & Intention.
The Object of Service. Because at this point I truly believe in the Gita 9:26 with my interpretation on 5/12/2011 as, "Service to others IS Service to the Lord. Swadeshi! This is "Rajavidya", the 1st Duty".

And also about work to really step it up and transcend what I feel about my co-workers. I can't blame them for getting me down.
This time I can because the incompetence of a dishwasher got me injured. I'm not mad about it but I can only help myself, not that individual...but iDigress...

My Thursday oddly balanced. my 3-Day Weekend Became a Four. I got a Doctor's Note & Get To Keep my Holiday Pay, To Boot!, nyuk nyuk.
My Big Toe is kinda a metaphor for my life...Almost Broke. Ha ha!

Although on this Labor Day, I rededicate myself to Flip Satre's Problem and act in this Maxim, "Heaven May be in Other People as Well..."

At 3AM, One Hour Before I Rise for The Workday…
I gotta get up to pee.
Yup. I do. Sometime 2AM. but I’ve gone to bed around 8:00PM so I’ve been having a good night’s sleep already.
I drink a lot of water before I go to bed and I’ve trusted in something referred to as the “Indian Alarm Clock” for years now. Sure it’s a joke but it ended up being a vessel of Wisdom for Energy & Information exist in the Punchline…ain’t I a pissah but iDigress…
(a lot of the time the amount of water I drink is proportional to the volume of beer I imbibe lest I get the “early afternoon grumpies”).

Nonetheless, shortly after I’m roused from Sleep due to Biology, the Voluntary Snooze happens
(just as it seems I’ve only closed my eyes again to slap a High-Five to whatever smidge of a dream I get…)
At 3:30AM, my first alarm goes off. I don’t hit “snooze”. The next alarm goes off at 4:00AM then it’s time to play “Up & @ ‘Em!” Again.
So usually the entire time of my slumber, in order to drown out any Living Room noises…
I got the iPod playing its FM Radio as it’s recharging through a wallwart, docked through a boombox.

I could be being programmed as I sleep!!
So I do what I am told…I listen to my Radio…

What’s cooler than this? Ice Cold! ^_^

So lately I’m restless after 3:30AM no longer getting that last Dream Smash before the Daily Dash…
Because I think I’m actually interested in the Programme.
For I listen to Boston’s NPR 90.9FM all night long…
And all night long from 12AM ‘til 5AM, the Airwaves are owned by the BBC World Report. Where I get the World through my Speakers.
So at 3:50AM…a tiny but meaningful 10-minute long programme airs Mon-Fri robbing me of my last precious minutes of Good Sleep.
Witness. A radio magazine article & a way-back machine. Usually from this date in history, the stories of News Worthy Events in the Era of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s tape vaults.
I’m alert and listening. I could be Meditating in this precious time…but no!
I’m listening to the BBC and a slice of history, of real lives lived and of stories told from their relative positions in the amber of Space/Time.
Such Aural Slices of 20th Century Newsreading as Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon Tiki & the early August 50th anniversary of the erecting of the Berlin Wall.

And as much as I love this show, I love sleep more.
I’ve begun shutting the radio off when I get back from by 2-3AM tinkle.
And I’ve been catching that Last Call for dreamtime as well. My sleep problem apparently solved but now I’m going to have to get the Podcast, huh? Oh well.

I got no time for stinkin’ Podcasts though.
I’m only through Hour 4 out of 23 in Keith Richards’ Life, the unabridged audiobook.
Pete was Right…Keith’s story is Worth It. The Time & Money Spent.

What a Story. And I’ve only scraped the surface of this Glacier.
A crash-course in the Blues, I’ve learned more about the Genesis of Rock & Roll by Almost Living it through Keith’s remembrances and also his tale of growing up an Only Child resonated with me in ways that no one but another Only Child can Grok.
So far, one of my best iTunes purchases of 2011.

Ahhh…Radio. There’s always room for you especially on my iPod or even your Droid or iPhone’s many Swiss Army-Type Apps.

When You Shine Your Light on an Object, the Color of that Light Decides Your Choices.
Say if I shone RED on a problem...it gives me the choice of SMASH! FIGHT! or even DEPRESSION!
If I shine INDIGO on a situation that has my attention...it gives me a lot more than a few solutions. it gives me multitudes.
If I were to shine ORANGE on an Object...would i steal it or would I earn it?

So this is what I think about if I have to graph a definition of "Choice Matrix".

The Comics Gnome POOTS!...Something He Told Kiwi To Get

In the not-too-distant past, OCHO's Very Own Cracked Kiwi asked me a question:
"For someone who has been out of the DC/Marvel universe for over two years I need a good re-start point. I've tried to keep up with the comic gnome but that little sucker gets around!!! Any advice for a jump on point?"
And I was honored...I mean honored to forward the query onto the Gnome Himself.

The Gnome gave his honest opinion on the State of and What To Get from each of the Big Two Houses.
In each House, the Gnome suggested titles he's yet to POOT forth on me.
Nonetheless, after feeling a little left out, lo & behold it appeared the other day for my waiting eyes & hands.

BATWOMAN: ELEGY by Greg Rucka & J.H. Williams III.
"Anything BATWOMAN by Greg Rucka & J.H. Williams III was insane in terms of good crime drama storytelling meets inventive & dashing art!" came from the Comics Gnome although I had to translate it from the Hyper-Gibberish that He Usually Spouts but iDigress...
I know Kiwi was tuned into FIFTY-TWO way back in the halcyon daze of 2006, Just Five Years Ago. I remember her not finishing, or maybe she did. This BATWOMAN was introduced in that run of FIFTY-TWO and then written by Greg Rucka, one of comics best crime & action writers.
This book is as amazing as Amazing describes. Insane, breathtaking layouts. Panels echo Pop Art, then panel progressions cast in hues of Stain Glass Mosaics. Sometimes the obvious is always in front of us but revelation comes with storytelling.
Greg Rucka creates a world of suspense & action.
J.H. Williams III creates a new look.

and it's all accessible...a Bat-Character. See Why Kate Kane Chose the Bat as her fetish for Crime-Fighting.
Rucka writes great strong, flawed women as his protagonist.
Someday I'll break down and get the collected QUEEN & COUNTRY

Still in Late August and we can only talk about the Bruins is where the Stanley Cup travels. In Other News, I was recently in Portland, ME on a God-Blessed afternoon of relaxation & good company. My first thoughts were, I’d Move Here. I’ve Never Thought That…or hadn’t Since I’ve Seen San Francisco over a Dozen Years Past.
Portland has an AHL Hockey Team, the Portland Pirates.
And I looked it up…the same price for 10 games in the Nosebleeds of the Gahhden is the same for a Season Ticket at the Cumberland Civic Center on Free Street.
$420. Is that somekind of Cosmic Hint???
Portland was so wicked nice…the fresh food and the Seas Breeze.
